Freeport Container Port is a privately owned and operated port of Hutchison Port Holdings (HPH), the world's leading port investor, developer and operator with interests in 24 countries throughout Asia, the Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, Europe and the Americas. Today, HPH operates a total of 292 berths in 47 ports together with a number of transportation related service companies.

Freeport Container Port is located 65 miles from Florida, and is strategically located to serve as a major world container transshipment hub between the Eastern Gulf Coast of the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean, South America, and trade lanes to European, Mediterranean, the Far East, and Australian destinations.

Freeport Container Port was officially opened in July 1997 and presently comprises a total land area of:

  • 3,400 ft (1,036m of berths) with 15.5m depth alongside.
  • 10 Super Post Panamax Quayside Gantry Cranes
  • 2 Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes
  • 3 Empty Container Handlers
  • 59 Straddle Carriers
  • 1 Megaport Straddle Carrier (Radiation Detection Unit)

  • 49 Hectares/118 acres of Stacking Area
  • 16m / 52ft. in Channel & Turning Basin
  • Annual Capacity 1.5 Million TEU

Megaports Initiative

Megaports Initiative

The United States and The Bahamas signed a Memorandum of Understanding on December 30, 2004, to begin the implementation of the Megaports Initiative.

The objective of this initiative is to deter, detect, and interdict illicit nuclear and radioactive materials being trafficked through the global maritime system.
